Historias de Usera is the product of a cultural management workshop organized in the Usera district of Madrid. The locals themselves acted as ‘journalists’ who collected the urban legends about the neighborhood, and became the leading characters in the work together with the professional actors. In the words of the author, ‘the discourse itself has affected people deeply; it’s not so much because there are famous actors on the stage, it’s the content that is being described.’

Sánchez-Cabezudo dedicated the award to ‘the six neighbors who participated and brought these stories to life. Thanks to them, this project is unique and unrepeatable.

The great reception given to the work in the Matadero de Madrid theater led to a tour through other Spanish cities at the start of the year, including Valencia and Seville. At the start of the tour, Sánchez-Cabezudo said that ‘the support of BBVA Foundation has been key to bringing this to fruition because it’s not a commercial project, it’s a social, community project. This Grant gives us a public impact as creators.’

This recognition is in addition to that received by two of its actors, Inma Cuevas and José Troncoso, who were awarded the Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor in a Play.

The Max Theater Awards celebrated their 21st anniversary this year. They were created by the General Society of Authors and Editors (Spanish acronym: SGAE) with the aim of giving awards and recognition for the work of professionals and the quality of the outstanding productions of the year in this medium.
